How to Avoid Hidden Bus Ride Fees in Montenegro

After spending a great few days in Podgorica we decided to take a bus when leaving the capital city of Montenegro to Kotor. However, we were a bit worried as to how to buy bus tickets and when the best time to do that was.

Check out our previous post on the new town tour of Podgorica.

Our AIRBNB host assured us that it was a very easy process. First of all, you do not need to buy any third party online bus tickets, as that is where many get into trouble. If you buy third party tickets, not only will they be more expensive, but you will need to print them somewhere, as well as pay an extra fee when crossing the station gate to the bus. Yes, that was a weird one.

So, what should you do instead? Buy your bus ticket directly at the station, and they will print it for you right away. You also do not need to buy your bus ticket in advance, either. There are so many buses every day that you will find another one if the one you want is taken. In our case, we found an even earlier bus to Kotor than we planned, and we went with it instead of sitting at the station for a later bus to arrive.

We also had to pay one euro in cash for each our two suitcases. The bags we had on board were free to take, though. We didn’t pack huge suitcases with us, but the overhead bins weren’t that big. The bus was pretty packed when we got on.

It was also a hot summer day, so it was worth to buy a huge bottle of cold water at a supermarket near the station beforehand. Beware that the bathrooms do not always work on the buses, though.

The bus was very worth it to take, and it was less than 20 Euros for both of us to get to Kotor. We passed by the old royal city of Cetinje on the way, and that was where most of the scenic mountain views were. We also passed by Budva, which was due to the longer route that we took on our earlier bus.

We arrived in Kotor near the old town, and our journey concluded.
