We used a car rental in Agios Kirykos, Ikaria to drive to the village of Faros and back to retrieve our swimsuits that we forgot to take with us from the outdoor drying clothes-line of our Airbnb! We also took the opportunity to stock up on groceries in Agios Kirykos, as well as bottled water, since we were staying in the nearby thermal hot springs village of Therma, which didn’t sell any water nor food at the time of our visit off-season.

Google Maps Inaccuracies on Ikaria
The Google Maps were not always accurate, even in the capital city of Agios Kirykos. Be careful when the maps tell you to turn and there is no road to turn on. Still, we had cell service on most of the island roads.
The main roads and certain smaller ones were mostly in good condition. But, we saw some roads that led to unknown beaches or other places and they weren’t in great condition, however. Also, Ikaria’s topography is hilly. There could be very steep ascends/descends here and there. But, we had no problems overall even with a small car.
Renting a Car on Ikaria Island, Greece
It was relatively easy to rent a car. We walked up to one of the car rental shops in Agios Kirykos. There, we waited for the laid-back owner to return to his store from somewhere nearby. Because we were only interested in renting a car for a few hours, the owner kindly gave us a discount of €8, which reduced the total price to €40 for an automatic transmission vehicle by Citroën.

Because it was on short notice, we were informed that the car had a problem with locking. But, as one of our Airbnb hosts said: “There is zero criminality on Ikaria!”. So, we were not too concerned.
The car we got was modern and freshly cleaned. The friendly store owner was also adamant of us visiting the nearby beach and not to return the car earlier than we wanted to. We were tired from the long day, though. After getting our swimsuits and unpacking our grocery haul at our Airbnb in Therma, we returned the vehicle early.
