Part 107 Renewal | All You Need to Know

Have you done your part 107 renewal with a course from the FAA? This is a must for all part 107 drone pilots. In this post, I will cover all you need to know about taking this course and not to miss your part 107 license renewal.

Part 107 Renewal Course

The part 107 renewal course is called “Part 107 Small UAS Recurrent – Non-61 Pilots”. This part 107 renewal course is available for free from the FAA website.

As a part 107 certificate holder, one must take this exam to operate a drone commercially. It is required if more than 24 months has passed since anyone took their initial part 107 exam or since the last recurrent course completed. In my case, I passed my part 107 exam exactly two years ago. So, I needed to take this class. After taking it a few days ago, I will have to take it again in two years.

Coursework

Study time: 2 hours

The FAA recommends setting aside 2 hours to cover the required material in the course. It will be mostly in the reading format with reinforcing quiz questions. It took me a little over an hour to go over everything.

The exam is divided into two main sections with five modules in total.

Section 1. Aircraft and Remote Pilot in Command Requirements

  • Module 1. Characteristics and Requirements for sUAS
  • Module 2. Remote Pilot in Command Responsibilities

Section 2. Rules for Safe Operation of sUAS

  • Module 1. Preflight considerations
  • Module 2. Operating Rules
  • Module 3. Abnormal and Emergency Operations

The first section covers what a drone is, its weight and marking requirements. It also covers various regulations aspects of what a remote pilot must do in various situations.

The second section was the longest, especially its module 2. The material there was specific to operating drones at night and different category drones and how to operate them over people.

If you took your exam in or after 2021, your study material likely covered everything in this recurrent course. To be honest with you, I felt like it was a rehash of what I remember learning then.

Taking the Part 107 Renewal Exam

Number of Questions: 45

Time to Complete: 90 minutes

Once I completed the required coursework, I was taken to the exam page. The exam consisted of 45 questions and the FAA gave me 90 minutes to complete it. It took me about 10-15 minutes.

To pass the exam, a 100% score is required. But, no worries. The questions were easy and similar to what I remember seeing when studying 2 years ago. What’s more, the FAA allows looking at the coursework material during the exam. That made it even easier. I may have hesitated on maybe 2-3 questions. But, the rest were a breeze.

On the first take, I got a 100% grade. But, if I did not get 100%, the system would mark the incorrect questions. I guess I would have had to correct them and resubmit my answer again as many times as needed to get a perfect score.

Save Your Part 107 Renewal Course Certificate

Once I completed the exam, I saved and printed my certificate of completion for the course. A part 107 pilot must always carry this certificate of completion with him along with the part 107 license card to operate the drone legally. Тhe certificate card (the plastic one) is not renewed though. It stays the same.
